Purpose
Requirements, purpose and end use of this task
Vault or team center clean up task is one of the process in data migration to any PDM
application. The complete process of data migration involves initially data dumping stage.
After the data is dumped to the server location provided for the Team Center or vault
server there are tends to be following issues that needs to be addressed, namely:
- Identification of duplicate Part numbers per file
- Identification of duplicate file names
- Missing or Incorrect file attributes
- Missing or Incorrect file links
- In correct file revision
- Non-current parts in current assemblies
- Number/ Percentage of CAD files in the source system
- Number / Percentage of Non CAD files in the source system
- Relationship between CAD & Non-CAD data in the source system
Correcting all the above issues requires a detailed vault or team center clean up process.
The end use of this task would be a vault or Team center devoid of duplicates and wrongly
linked files.
Inputs required & volume of work
Inputs required
For TeamCenter clean up task, one would require the following data and authorities:
- Statistical data list of duplicates and real files.
- Plan to execute the files according to priorities.
Volume of work in hand and the team size
This task involved more than 12,000 files and about 18,000 linked assembly and drawing
files.It was a three member team assigned to the task.
Process required
The process of clean up involved:
- Searching all the parts with the same name and the linked files for each file.
- Identifying the real part or assembly based on the number of features or parts, number of configurations & the amount of re-linking required.
- Correcting all the configurations and linked assemblies and drawings
- Re-linking all links to the duplicate files to real files.
- Converting all duplicate files to obsolete files.
- Correcting all mates and relations with the real part.
Challenges and the ideas used
Challenge faced
The challenge was to correct files which had more than 1000 configurations at one go.
Interlinked files which had inter-dependant with duplicate files.
Solutions, tips and new teamcenter options
For the challenges we discovered specific search criterions, so that we could process the multiple files in one go. We had utilized various new methods to streamline the search items in team center. These were some of the new discoveries while using teamcenter, but were not taught during the Teamcenter training.

As of today. there have been 11.805 obsoleted parts And another 678 were made unavailable to users with just the DoNotUse_’. This is fantastic!
I have not had a chance to look up how many good files were corrected by you and the other guys. but there were 10.478 files that you guys fixed from the body plant clean-up efforts alone

The task was completed early than excepted and the team was allotted with new tasks
and challenges. During this process we had to deal with 27 critical parts an assemblies
which had immediate links with production ready assemblies and master assemblies. All
the errors and discrepancies were handled with care and observation to detail.

If there are multiple items with same name Teamcenter tends to link the assemblies and drawing with wrong or duplicate parts.
